Who We Are

Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois is a community-based not-for-profit organization whose mission is to create opportunities for individuals with barriers to enhance their lives.  Rockford, IL serves as the headquarters for Goodwill Northern Illinois and is one of 165 Goodwill agencies under the auspices of Goodwill Industries International (GII).  GII was recently named by Forbes Magazine as the #2 not-for-profit in the country.  Goodwill Northern Illinois’ territory includes an 18-county area in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin with a combined population of over 1.1 million residents. Goodwill’s retail operations sell donated, gently-used products as well as new items such as overstocks and close-outs from some of the best-known stores in the state. Goodwill stores in northern Illinois (Rockford, Machesney Park, Freeport, Sterling, DeKalb, Ottawa, McHenry, Huntley and Crystal Lake) and Beloit, Wisconsin employ more than 400 people.

What We Do

Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois accepts gently used and/or new clothing and household item donations.  These items are sold in our retail stores to help fund Goodwill's many community programs.

PROGRAMS

In 2013, Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois served 5,563 people in many different ways, but with the same end goal – helping people attain the tools and resources necessary to find and keep jobs.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT - Goodwill provided financial education services to 140 individuals, including courses in budgeting, goal setting, and financial management. In addition, Goodwill participated in Money Smart Week, serving 150 individuals, including children, and providing tools and resources with many community partners.

Goodwill also provided free income tax preparation and filing services to 2,087 individuals and families, returning over $2,100,000 in refunds to our local communities and saved individuals over $368,000 in tax fees.

TRAINING & EMPLOYMENT - Goodwill’s training and employment programs, including computer skills, work readiness skills, job seeking skills, and work experience served 1,112 people. Goodwill placed 142 individuals into good jobs in our communities with an average wage of $9.42 per hour and an average schedule of 21 hours per week. Goodwill's GoodGRAD Pre-GED Program provided GED scholarships for 72 individuals to take their tests and helped 36 students obtain their GED diploma. The Let's Go to Work Program provided 50 individuals with disabilities the opportunity to work in a supportive environment with a job coach, case management, and training. The program is currently functioning in Huntley, Freeport, McHenry, Sterling, Ottawa, and Crystal Lake.

COMMUNITY SERVICE - Our community service program  helps individuals give back and earn valuable service hours for housing organizations, legal authorities and schools. Goodwill Northern Illinois had over 520 community service participants with over 16,245 hours.

CORPORATE CITIZENSHIP - In addition to offering our participants dignity through employment, Goodwill continues to be a good citizen to the communities in which we serve. 

  • Goodwill generated $670,000 in retail sales tax and paid employee income taxes in the amount of over $300,000.
  • In 2013, Goodwill also diverted over 10 million pounds from our local landfills by recycling cardboard, shoes, clothing, and metals, and computers.
  • A total of $31,500 was awarded to 32 students with disabilities at area community colleges to help continue their education.
  • Backpacks packed with the necessary school supplies were given to 75 homeless high school students in Beloit, WI.
  • Goodwill's Be Good to Yourself workshop provided 40 job seekers with free haircuts, makeup consultations, massages, and interview clothing.
